Duo Mignarda – The delight of solitariness: Lute songs and solos of John Dowland
June 25, 2024

John Dowland’s lute songs were groundbreaking in their time. While similar music existed in Europe for a century before, it was often simpler arrangements or settings of existing tunes. Dowland’s genius was to combine the rhythmic energy of dance music with his own beautiful melodies and expressive lyrics, creating a superior style to his contemporaries.
Dowland’s knowledge of music theory and his time spent studying French and Italian music allowed him to craft innovative accompaniments for the lute. He used techniques specific to the instrument, like string suspensions and rhythmic syncopations, to create a rich and complex sound. Notably, his songbooks offered options for both solo and ensemble performances, showcasing his versatility and understanding of how best to present his music.
