Guillem Pérez-Quer – Your Majesty
A Musical Journey through the Renaissance
In the album “Your Majesty,” I explore the beautiful and distant repertoire of 16th-century European royal courts with my guitar, much like the protagonist in Mark Twain’s “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” feels transported back to the Middle Ages. The Renaissance, a period I deeply admire, reconnected the old world with its Greco-Latin roots, sparking a cultural and artistic explosion. The era’s ideal Courtier embodied grace, elegance, and knowledge, reflecting the humanist spirit with refined behavior and persuasive speech.
This album aims to recreate a musical dialogue between great Renaissance composers for the lute and vihuela, envisioning an impossible encounter where John Dowland, Luys de Narváez, Francesco da Milano, and Luys de Milano share their art. The guitar, once relegated to the popular class, now inherits the rich traditions of the lute and vihuela, bringing a powerful emotionality to these compositions. Immersing in Renaissance music ignites a renewed identity, guiding us back to our roots to be reborn anew.
