Description

Christopher Avilez is a Mexican classical guitarist with master’s studies in performance at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC), the Faculty of Music of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and the University of Alicante. He has pursued advanced studies at the Klagenfurt Conservatory in Austria with Marco Tamayo, and at the Frankfurt Conservatory in Germany with Thomas Bittermann.

With an active international career, Avilez has performed in Germany, Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Colombia, Spain, Ecuador, Slovenia, the United States, France, Italy, Mexico, and Peru. He has appeared as a soloist with renowned ensembles including the Orquesta de Cámara de Morelos, Camerata de Morelos, Orquesta Mexicana de las Artes, Orquesta Carlos Chávez, Orquesta Sinfónica de Cuenca, and the Orquesta Sinfónica del Cusco.

His discography includes six albums, among them XIII Sonatas para guitarra y bajo continuo (Veracruz, 1776) by Juan Antonio de Vargas y Guzmán, Imágenes… (Contemporary Mexican Music for Flute and Guitar), Concerto for Classic Guitar & Jazz Piano Trio by Claude Bolling, Fisis Quartet, and Sudamérica Seductora featuring works by Villa-Lobos, Ginastera, Barrios Mangoré, and Sinesi. He has also recorded Al pie del volcán, an unpublished guitar work by Pedro Ximénez Abril y Tirado (1784–1856), and the double album 3ª Colección Pedro Ximénez Abril y Tirado.

Avilez has been awarded over twenty prizes in national and international guitar competitions, as well as the State Youth Award (2013) in the category of Art Promotion and Culture. He has received grants from the Program for the Promotion of Artistic Creation and Development (PECDAM, 2008 and 2018), the Scenic Creators Program (2011), and the Program for Cultural Projects and Conversions (2019 and 2023) of Mexico’s National Fund for Culture and the Arts (FONCA).
