Ēriks Ešenvalds

Description

Ēriks Ešenvalds is one of Latvia’s most internationally acclaimed composers, celebrated for weaving poetry, myth, and spirituality into music of striking beauty and emotional depth. His works are performed by leading choirs, orchestras, and soloists worldwide, and have been recorded on more than 50 albums, including nine devoted exclusively to his music.

A graduate of the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, with further studies in theology, Ešenvalds has served as composer-in-residence at Cambridge University and has been honored with numerous international awards. His inspiration often comes from nature, folklore, sacred traditions, and the mysteries of the cosmos, creating music that feels at once timeless and deeply human.

Ešenvalds’s sound world combines luminous harmonies, flowing melodies, and an evocative sense of space — carrying listeners from the earthly to the transcendental. His recent collaborations with saxophonist Oskars Petrauskis, including the concerto Arctic Visions: The Sea, highlight his ability to merge storytelling, improvisation, and spirituality into profound musical experiences.
