Gunta Smirnova

Description

Gunta Smirnova is a Latvian soprano acclaimed for her luminous voice, stylistic elegance, and expressive interpretations, with a repertoire spanning from early Baroque to contemporary music. She studied at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and the Zurich University of the Arts, and further refined her artistry with renowned musicians including Isolde Siebert, Olena Tokar, Carlos Mena, and René Jacobs.

She has performed with leading ensembles such as the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, La Cetra Baroque Orchestra Basel, Basel Chamber Orchestra, and Venice Baroque Orchestra, collaborating with conductors including Ton Koopman, Andrea Marcon, René Jacobs, Joshua Rifkin, Andreas Reize, and Jörg-Andreas Bötticher.

Highlights of her career include the European tour of Telemann’s Orpheus with René Jacobs and B’Rock Orchestra, appearances at major festivals including Innsbruck Festival of Early Music, Bachfest Leipzig, and Musikfest Bremen, as well as acclaimed performances at Theatre Basel and Zurich Opera House. A semifinalist at the Handel Singing Competition in London and recipient of several scholarships, she has established herself as one of the promising voices of her generation.

Since 2024, Gunta Smirnova has been a lecturer in Historical Performance Practice for singers at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music in Riga.
