Description
Mikayel Balyan is an Armenian pianist and harpsichordist recognized for his versatile artistry across the repertoire of historical keyboard instruments. After studying piano in Yerevan, Moscow, and at the Music Academy Basel with Rudolf Buchbinder, he pursued advanced studies in harpsichord, clavichord, music theory, and historical improvisation at the University of the Arts Bremen, the University of Music and Theatre Hamburg, and the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.
As a soloist, Mikayel Balyan has collaborated with distinguished conductors including Loris Tjeknavorian, Vladimir Spivakov, Howard Griffiths, and René Jacobs. He is a frequent guest at leading international festivals such as the Salzburg Festival, Musikfest Bremen, Resonanzen Vienna, the Days of Early Music in Herne, and Festival Radovljica. An active chamber musician, he was awarded prizes at the International Johann Heinrich Schmelzer Competition and was Artist in Residence at Musikfest Bremen with cellist Davit Melkonyan.
His recordings include critically acclaimed releases for Sony Music / Deutsche harmonia mundi, Genuin, Musiques Suisses, and Vivat, alongside numerous radio productions for Deutschlandfunk, NDR, ORF, and other European broadcasters.
Mikayel Balyan is Professor at the Music and Arts Private University of the City of Vienna and, since 2024, has also served as Professor of Fortepiano at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz.
Alongside his performing and teaching activities, Balyan is also a composer whose works, inspired by historical styles, are regularly featured in his concert programmes.
