Vahan Sargsyan

Description

Armenian classical guitarist Vahan Sargsyan began his musical journey at age 10 at the A. Tsitsikyan Music School in Yerevan, making his stage debut the same year. A few years later, he transferred to the P. I. Tchaikovsky Secondary Music School to study with Professor Nune Badalyan of the Komitas State Conservatory. Vahan continued his studies with Professor Badalyan at the Yerevan Conservatory until he began his military service in Artsakh in 2020.

The start of his service coincided with the outbreak of the 44-day Second Nagorno-Karabakh War in 2020. A year and a half later, in 2022, he was discharged and returned to Yerevan. As a message from these days Vahan wrote his first piece as a composer titled The Roots. Thanks to nearly continuous practice even during the military service—interrupted only by a seven-month pause there—Vahan resumed his studies at the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory, rejoining Professor Badalyan’s class.

Vahan is a prizewinner and laureate of numerous international competitions, including 2nd Prize at the Tbilisi International Classical Guitar Competition (Georgia, 2016), the Pleven International Guitar Festival-Competition (Bulgaria, 2019), the Grand Prix at the “Renaissance” International Festival-Competition (Armenia, 2016, 2018), and 1st Prize at the “Art Music” International Festival (Armenia, 2014/15/16).

He has served as a jury member for the 1st Primavera Charitable Foundation All-Armenian Classical Guitar Competition (Armenia).

In addition to his performances, Vahan is passionate about sharing his expertise with aspiring musicians. His contributions to Armenian classical music education as a teacher are well recognized, and he continues to inspire through both his performances and pedagogy.
