This album features lute virtuoso Andreas Martin performing works primarily by John Dowland (1563 – 1626), the celebrated “English Orpheus”. The artist presents a small kaleidoscope of Dowland’s work – from arrangements of popular, anonymous “Ballad Tunes” of the time of Shakespeare to courtly dances, Pavans, Galliards and Almaines with finely elaborated diminutions, peaking with the exquisite contrapuntal – polyphonic compositions “Fancies”. Dowland’s pieces are accompanied by works of his great English lutenist contemporaries like Francis Cutting and John Danyel.
