Description

‘Operalia’s First Prize winner in 2017, the young South African tenor Levy Sekgapane releases his first album, ‘Giovin Fiamma’, featuring Rossini arias. He is accompanied by the Münchner Rundfunkorchester conducted by Giacomo Sagripanti (Young Conductor winner in the 2016 International Opera Awards).

Very much a rising star internationally and wonderfully suited to the Rossinian style, Levy Sekgapane brings freshness, clarity and thrilling and seductive vocal qualities to this Prima Classic recording. It combines arias from nine different Rossini operas, Il barbiere di SivigliaL’italiana in AlgeriLa CenerentolaSemiramideOtelloLa donna del lagoZelmiraIl Turco in Italia and Elisabetta regina d’Inghilterra. The Italian composer wrote these for three particular and very different singers: Giovanni Davide, Manuel García, and Andrea Nozzari.

…first class, with the tenor’s bright, slightly nasal tone running around the notes with great accuracy.

Sekgapane sings with a palpable exuberance that distinguishes Giovin fiamma as a young singer’s invitation for the listener to join him on his artistic journey.

The singing is virile with forward-moving enthusiasm and he applies those little grace notes with taste and elegance.

…it is the “Giovanni Davide” part of this program that seems the most revealing of Levy Sekgapane’s true vocal identity, under the double profile of the graceful singer and his weightless scales.
